New Zealand Wines
New Zealand wines are produced on both the North and South Islands. The 1970s saw major developments in the industry, and by 1980 there were about 5,500 hectares under vine. Almost half of the new plantings are on the South Island, around the town of Blenheim in the Marlborough region. Today, New Zealand is recognised throughout the world, and is renowned for its highly distinctive quality wines. These include crisp and fruity Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and well-balanced red wines from Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc strains.

"If all be true that I do think,
There are five reasons we should drink;
Good wine- a friend- or being dry-
Or lest we should be by and by-
Or any other reason why."
Henry Aldrich
